How do I transfer an expired domain name?

Howdy y'all. I registered a domain name with g_d____.com (analogous to yomamma.com) but it's now expired. There's no website (yet). To recover the expired the domain name, the registrar wants to charge almost U$100 for a "redemption package." Exhorbitant, sez I. And the registrar says that, in a few days, the domain will be auctioned and the initial bid is U$12. I don't wanna lose the domain name, but don't wanna pay the big fee to redeem the registration if I don't have to.

But I'm guessing that a domain registration must be current before it can be transferred.

What are my options? Thanks much.

How did you not notice all of the reminders of the upcoming expiration?
You cannot transfer a domain name that is not registered. It is, by
definition, publicly available.
Unless someone else has registered it for resale, a tactic known as
domain name squatting.

Sorry - you didn't renew it. The redemption period is a courtesy to you
offered by the registrar. They would have been entirely correct if they
would have just released the domain when it expired.

So either pay the redemption fee or take your chances that someone else
doesn't grab it.
